The Enforcement Directorate of India (ED), on Friday, conducted raids in New Delhi, Jaipur and Thane and arrested two alleged bookies, Mukesh Sharma and Sukhvinder Singh Sodhi from New Delhi, for their supposed involvement in three different matches of IPL 2015. Another suspect after the investigation, Anil Jaisinghania from Thane, evaded arrest after complaining of ill-health and got himself admitted to a hospital.
"All the leads we have got so far are about big-time bookies who have never been caught. We have strong leads that some matches in the current edition of IPL may have been fixed," said an ED officer. The Source also added that Sharma and Sodhi were big players in the IPL betting scene and that the ED has asked Jaisinghania, a key link to the investigation, to appear before the ED officials in Ahmedabad on Monday.
Those arrested are said to have been routing money from the IPL bets abroad through the betting website betfair.com. An investigation officer added that both Sodhi and Sharma were allegedly involved but could not be cornered in 2013, when the issue of match-fixing in IPL first broke out. "Bookies across the country were in touch with Sharma and Sodhi. We have learnt that the betting amount is remitted out of the country through hawala channels through these two accused," the officer added.
ED officials also recovered documents, INR 6.5 lakh in cash and jewellery from a house belonging to brothers Vineet and Rahul Gangwal. The brothers were said to be in touch with bookies in Bangladesh and Pakistan using Skype. The documents recovered were related to the arrest of Ritiesh Bansal, accused No.16 in the IPL match-fixing case.
IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla told that BCCI were yet to recieve information from the ED's findings and that the board would cooperate with the directorate when needed. "We haven't heard anything from ED yet," Rajiv Shukla said. "As per procedure, they (ED) will get in touch with our ACSU (Anti-Corruption and Security Unit) if they need any details. The ACSU doesn't come under IPL governing council, it reports directly to the BCCI President. If the ED seeks anything from BCCI, we will fully cooperate.
